Comparing offers when nobody quotes the same way

One lender quotes a fee and a monthly figure. Another talks about a factor. A third shows a weekly direct debit. Trying to compare them on an interest rate rarely works, because business loans often bundle interest with establishment fees, line fees and other charges, and many do not show a comparison rate at all. The one number every offer shares is the total cost: what you repay in total, minus what you actually receive.

This calculator works backwards from that number. Enter the amount that would land in your account, the total cost and the term, and it spreads the repayable amount evenly across weeks, fortnights and months. It also shows the cost for every dollar received, which is the fairest single figure for lining up offers of different sizes and lengths.

Can the business carry the repayments?

Add your average monthly deposits and the calculator shows what share of them the repayments would take. There is no magic threshold, because margins differ wildly between industries, but if repayments would swallow a large slice of deposits in a business with thin margins, a longer term, a smaller amount or a property-secured structure may be safer. Our guide to the total cost of finance walks through the maths.

When there are no repayments

Property-secured loans can often be structured with interest prepaid or added to the loan. In that case nothing comes out weekly, and the whole amount is repaid at the end, from a sale, a refinance or business cash. Choose that option to see the payout figure, and make sure the exit is realistic before you sign.

Questions about this tool

Why does this calculator use total cost instead of an interest rate?

Business finance is priced on each borrower's circumstances and often combines interest with establishment and other fees. The total cost, meaning everything you repay above the amount you receive, lets you compare any two offers on equal terms, whatever the pricing looks like.

Where do I find the total cost on a quote?

Add up every repayment you would make over the term, plus any fees deducted up front or charged at the end, then subtract the amount that actually lands in your account. If the quote does not make that easy, ask the lender for the total amount repayable in writing.

What does the cost per dollar figure mean?

It divides the total cost by the amount you receive. A figure of 0.15 means every dollar borrowed costs fifteen cents over the term. It is a quick way to compare offers of different sizes and lengths side by side.

Can repayments be paused on a property-secured loan?

Many property-secured business loans can be set up with interest prepaid or added to the loan, so there are no regular repayments. Choose the no-repayments option to see the single payout figure at the end instead.
